13 October – Levi Tafari and Robert Williams

Levi Tafari was born in Liverpool. He is the author of a number of poetry collections including Duboetry (1987), Liverpool Experience (1989) and Rhyme Don’t Pay (1998), From the Page to the Stage, (2006). His plays have been performed at the Unity Theatre and the Playhouse in Liverpool, as well as at the Blackheath Theatre in Stafford. He has also worked on educational projects running creative writing workshops in schools, colleges, universities, youth centres, prisons and libraries nationally and internationally. Levi Tafari is a crucial, rhythmic, poetic consciousness-raiser and urban griot. His performance and educational work has a high profile nationally and internationally, and he has made many television and radio appearances.

Robert Williams grew up in Clitheroe, Lancashire and currently lives in Manchester. His first novel, Luke and Jon, won a Betty Trask award and was called ‘a hugely impressive debut’ in the Daily Telegraph. His second novel, How the Trouble Started, was shortlisted for the Portico Prize for Fiction. Into the Trees, his third novel, was published in 2014. His novels have been translated into twelve languages. He has worked in a secondary school library, as a bookseller for Waterstones, and has written and released music under the name The Library Trust.

20 October – Carcanet Poets x 4 Launch – Carcanet New Poetries

From the first New Poetries anthology in 1994 to this sixth volume, Carcanet has showcased the work of some of the most engaging and inventive new poets writing in English, many of whom have gone on to notable success. Hear from four selected for the latest edition: John Clegg received an Eric Gregory Award in 2013 and his pamphlet Captain Love and the Five Joaquins is published by Emma Press; Joey Connolly edits poetry journal Kaffeeklatsch, received an Eric Gregory Award in 2012 and has a first collection forthcoming from Carcanet; David Troupes has published two collections and his comic strip Buttercup Festival appears in PN Review; Judith Willson’s edition of Selected Poems by Charlotte Smith and an anthology of Victorian women poets are published by Carcanet.

Both events are free. Just turn up on the night.
