The University of Bolton is delighted to be a sponsor of Bolton Mets Rugby League Club for the 2017 season.

The relationship between the University and club has flourished in recent years with several students participating in Rugby League both on and off the field.

Four Sports Rehabilitation students currently work with the club at training and on match days to provide physio support.

Andy Platt, who is studying for an MSc in Psychology at the University of Bolton, plays Second Row for Bolton Mets.

‘We have constant care at training and matches from the students,’ said Andy.

‘They provide great care, ensuring that we are in good condition and any injury is properly treated.’

The four second-year students working with the club this season are Shane Ingram, Olga Witkowska, Esther Nyamwitha and Becky Ashurst. In 2016, fellow Sports Rehab students Emma Hamilton and Robert Thorpe also volunteered at the club.

Bolton Mets play in the North West Mens League during the summer months and are now in their 22nd year of bringing Rugby League to the town.

‘As a community sports club it is vitally important to have support from local people and businesses so that we can continue to bring our chosen sport to the people of Bolton,’ said Bolton Mets Chairman, Stuart Cooke.

‘When we can we try and engage with our sponsors as much as possible to make it a mutually beneficial partnership, we want to support and promote them as much as they do for us.

‘The help we have received from these students has been invaluable and in return we hope they have earned some much needed hands on experience that they can take into the future employment.

‘We look forward to the partnership between Bolton Mets and the University of Bolton continuing for many more years to come and would like to take this opportunity to offer any students the opportunity to get involved, whether as a player or volunteer, and enjoy being part of a community focused Rugby League club.’

President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Bolton Professor George E Holmes DL said:

‘The University of Bolton has long played a pivotal role in the town of Bolton engaging with local charities and organisations as part of its social responsibility. One of the key strategic targets for the institution is to liaise and work with business, industry and the community in knowledge transfer through partnerships and applied research linked to teaching.

‘Sport and physical activity is not just good for your body but is also beneficial for your mental health and wellbeing. The University is therefore delighted to work with many sports teams across the region to help promote these key messages.

‘Our sponsorship of Bolton Mets Rugby League Club supports this, and the students’ engagement through providing physio support at training and matches aids learning and allows them to develop experience in a real-world sporting environment.’
