The University has officially formed an exciting partnership with the Keys Federation Multi Academy Trust (MAT) to establish a new University Collegiate School (UCS).

The Secretary of State for Education signed-off the initiative on Friday 31 July.

As a result, the University and the MAT, which has been renamed Quest MAT, will create a new free school for pupils aged 11-18, built on the University’s campus, next to the University Technical College (UTC).

It will include new sports facilities, which will also be available for use by the University.

This move confirms an initial capital investment of approximately £10 million more from the Department for Education. Once detailed planning has been approved, construction work will commence.

The new University Collegiate School will take its first cohort of students this September, housed in the UTC building, until the new school is constructed.

Professor George E Holmes DL, President and Vice Chancellor, was delighted that the University Collegiate School had been given the official go-ahead by the Government.

He said: “I would like to congratulate all colleagues involved in the transaction which has been complex but entirely successful.

“My thanks particularly to Dr Sue Duncan and Bill Webster, in his capacity as the Chair of the UTC. I look forward to a thriving addition to the University campus.”

Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Anne Galloway, said: “I am pleased to welcome the UCS and I am sure the first cohort of year seven students are looking forward to starting in September.

“This new school is an important part of our work to create more secondary school places in the borough as more people choose to live in Bolton.

Sharon Bruton is confirmed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Quest MAT. Nicola Glynn, Principal of Bolton UTC, will report to the Quest Mat CEO.

The following appointments have been made to the Quest Mat Board, with the approval of the Secretary of State – MAT Membership: The Right Reverend Lord Bishop Nigel McCulloch KCVO, University Pro Chancellor; The Right Honourable Baroness Helen Newlove, University Pro Vice Chancellor. MAT Directorship: The Right Honourable Baroness Morris of Bolton OBE DL, University Chancellor Emeritus; Dr Andrew Roberts DSc(hc), Chair of Bolton College and University Governor; Professor George E Holmes DL, University Vice Chancellor.
