The Government have announced further details of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and how this will affect universities. Under the scheme universities will be rated as ‘Does Not Meet Expectations’, ‘Meets Expectations’, ‘Excellent’ or ‘Outstanding’. This scheme becomes effective in 2016-17. The plan is that in future years individual departments will be assessed. Universities with good ratings will increase their league table position and can raise their fees. Poor ratings would require universities, and eventually departments, to reduce their fees.
