US-based, world-renowned industry sculptor Don Lanning flew in from Los Angeles to teach an exclusive private four-day class to 12 students in the University’s SFX studio.

Don is one of the most in-demand sculptors working in film today. His work has been featured in more than 70 movies, including Star Trek Beyond, Batman v Superman, Oblivion, Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Avengers, Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides, H2: Halloween 2, Alien vs. Predator and Hellboy.

The hands-on ‘Sculpting Creatures and Characters Half Mask’ course focused on taking a life-size clay half-mask sculpture from start to completion.

Don gave step-by-step demonstrations and students created their own character sculpture with his coaching.

Lizzy Mosely, a third-year SFX student, said: “Don is really inspirational to work with. The course gave me so many new techniques, and I would love to have the opportunity to work with him again.”

  • Emily McGrory, features in the photo with Don. Her sculpt, was just one of the excellent examples of work produced by internal and external students who wanted to learn from Don Lanning, a master sculptor in the Special Effects Industry. Emily is just in the second year of the Special Effects course, she has produced a fine example of sculpting, inspired by mythological characters. Programme leader Rik McEvoy-Crompton organised the masterclass, as one of the examples of maintaining industry contact throughout the course. The Special Effects courses also feature Industry Projects and demonstrations from a broad range of special effects practitioners.
