As you may recall, following a recommendation from the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA), the Board of Governors gave its approval for the University to implement the national pay award of 1.8% locally to staff in January 2020 – backdated to the 1 August 2019.

Although at a national level there was industrial action over salaries and pensions towards the end of last year; UCEA and the University and College Union (UCU) have continued to engage in discussions at a national level with a view to seeking a way forward to their dispute.

These constructive discussions have resulted in a modified offer from UCEA, which was presented to all sector trade unions on 27 January 2020. Information on the new proposals, which aim to address the sector issues around casual employment, workload, gender pay gaps/ethnicity pay, can be found here.

Locally, the University will continue to work constructively and collaboratively with our trade union partners on these matters where appropriate, and of course on any local issues affecting our own employees.

The national pay talks for the 2020-21 pay are due to commence in March this year.
