One of the world’s most influential psychologists headlined a special event at the University of Bolton.
Sir Cary Cooper CBE was guest of honour at the first ever TEDxSalon in the North West of England.
The inaugural TEDxSalon event explored the theme ‘In the Psychologist’s Chair’.
It featured Professor Cooper joined by the university’s Professor of Psychology, Jerome Carson, who is one of the UK’s experts on mental health and wellbeing.
Prof Carson said that Sir Cary had links with Bolton, as his daughter completed her degree at the University of Bolton. He was also a governor of Bolton School for a time.
The audience was made up of a mix of professionals from across the UK, plus students and staff.
Prof Carson said: “It was a tremendous event. Sir Cary is a legend and being able to ask him questions was a privilege. We learned a lot more about him through an interview.
“He is 78 years old and shows no signs of slowing down – he is an incredibly positive person.
“The students present were inspired by him and many queued afterwards to get word – and a selfie – with him.
“It was a career highlight for me. We now hope to organise more of these events in the New Year.”
Prof Cooper was awarded a CBE in the 2001 Birthday Honours for his contribution to occupational/organisational health.
He was knighted in the 2014 Birthday Honours for services to social science.
Bolu Oyesola, the President of Bolton Students’ Union gave a vote of thanks to Prof Cooper.
Ianis G. Matsoukas PhD, Assistant Teaching Professor in Biomedical Sciences and Curator of TEDxUniversityofBolton, who organised the event, welcomed the audience.
