The Red Box Project is an initiative that quietly ensures that no young woman misses out on her education because of her period. The project is 100% community driven and run by individuals across the UK. The Red Box Project places constantly stocked Red Boxes of sanitary wear in schools for young women to access, aiming to reach those who may not be able to afford these vital items.
The Red Box Project was initiated in March 2017 by three friends who wanted to give young women in their local area access to sanitary products. After reading about ‘Period Poverty‘ in the news, they were angered at the idea that young women were missing out on their education because they couldn’t afford the products they needed during their period. They decided to take action and contacted their local schools to ask if a constantly stocked box of sanitary wear would be welcomed. The feedback from teachers was that the issue was real and the resource was needed. Recognising that the need was nationwide, they invited individuals from across the country to be a part of this movement and the response was overwhelming. From Scotland to Cornwall, people began to group together and set up Red Boxes of tampons and towels in their local schools.
The Red Box Project has now been set up in Bolton, and Bolton SU are now one of the official drop-off points. We are looking for donations of sanitary products to help girls in the local area, which can be added to our red box in the SU office at all times that we are open. Once this box is filled it will be donated to schools here in Bolton. We are asking staff and students for donations where possible and appreciate any support you can provide, from directly donating or even just sharing the project with your students.
