To raise awareness of World Mental Health Day, the University of Bolton partnered with local voluntary mental health organisation, BAND (Building A New Direction), offering a day focused on community health and wellbeing.
The successful event, which took place on 10 October in the university’s Social Learning Zone, brought together a host of health and wellness organisations including the Alzheimer’s Society, Asian Elders Resource Centre, British Red Cross, Diabetes UK, Bolton LGBT+, NHS Bolton CCG, YMCA, Workplace Mental Health as well as many others.
Visitors enjoyed stage performances involving activities such as gentle yoga, a fashion show, choir concerts, Bollywood dancing and Zumba. Workshops on offer included jewellery making, henna hand painting, pottery making and even Arabic writing lessons.
The team at BAND commented: “The overall aim of the event was to promote sustainable, personal and community wellbeing through people looking after themselves and supporting each other. The diversity of people attending, from stage performers, stall holders and volunteers to students and members of the public created a positive and dynamic event that Bolton can be proud of. The attendance figures exceeded our expectations and helped generate much meaningful and creative communication around mental health and wellbeing.
We are immensely grateful to the University of Bolton for their support before and during the event. We would also like to thank those that gave their time and effort so willingly and to the individuals and companies that donated raffle prizes.”
The University of Bolton offers a free and confidential service to all students experiencing mental health issues, including difficulties with sleep, time management, negative thoughts, poor motivation, learning difficulties and more.
