Following their 2017 graduation from the University of Bolton School of the Arts Film/Animation and Illustration Department, alumni Nick Cooke, Stacey Johnson, Shervin Shirazian and Sofia Sourianou have achieved amazing success in the Los Angeles Short Film Festival with their film, ‘The Getaway’. The film is a story about alien beings taking over the world by replicating humans.

Beating many other top quality entries in the competition, The Getaway won a string of awards including Best Student Film, Best Thriller and Best Science Fiction Film, in addition to receiving an Honorary Mention for Cinematography.

The four students completed degrees in Media, Writing and Production or Film Production for the Music Industry. During these courses they were encouraged to enter a range of competitions to give them real-life experience. They also had opportunities to work on live projects for clients and most of their taught modules consisted of simulated live briefs. This reality-focused learning ensures graduates have the best possible chance of success in the highly competitive market they enter after graduation.

To make The Getaway the four alumni had to work as part of a close team, each using their different talents and abilities to contribute to the final film. Dr Mick Farr, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader in Film/Animation and Illustration commented,

‘The thing I particularly like about Film Production courses is that every term students get the opportunity to work collaboratively and these alumni are testament to the success of their teamwork’.

‘They all came from different disciplines with individual talents and interests and managed to co-write and produce this tremendous award-winning film together. This team approach reflects the way all the staff in this department work together’.

The Los Angeles Short Film Festival features short and feature films from all over the world and the award will be a powerful launch platform for the careers of these alumni.  Their fantastic triumph builds on a previous student accolade in 2017, as earlier in the year Robbie Nash won the Royal Television Society North West Student Award for the Best Student Factual Film.
