UB-inVolved, the University’s Volunteering service, which formerly sat within the Careers Service, is now part of the Student Experience team and is working with colleagues from across the University to raise awareness of the value of volunteering to students and provide opportunities for students to get involved beyond their course and academic requirements.
Recent studies at Teesside University have looked at graduates completing the DLHE surveys to compare the achievements of students taking part in volunteering. Although this is only the second year of this study, it is reported that their findings once again show a higher percentage of students achieving either a First class or 2:1, and a higher percentage of students in either work/further study who took part in volunteering (completing a minimum of 50 hours).
From September 2016, we aim to encourage all new students to become volunteers as well as further engaging with existing students by showcasing previous volunteers’ achievements, the awards they have received and the benefits they have gained. With the help of Volunteering Ambassadors, recruited from amongst our existing student volunteer cohort, we plan to promote the extensive range of roles that come under the umbrella of volunteering through a presence at Welcome & Induction, Careers and Student Experience events.
There will be regular drop-in sessions in the Social Learning Zone for potential volunteers to talk to the Volunteering Co-ordinator and/or Volunteering Ambassadors and a number of class presentations are being arranged with academic staff. All of our student Peer Mentors and PASS Leaders will be accredited for their volunteering hours and be registered for the Bolton Award. Our volunteering offer is aligned very closely with the Bolton Award to ensure that students understand the benefit of gaining additional skills alongside their academic studies. If you would like further information regarding volunteering please contact Julia Hewitt (email@example.com).
