Owen Lowery on Inside Out North West

This week Creative Writing doctorate student Owen Lowery appeared on the BBC1’s Inside Out North West.

He completed his Masters in Creative Writing at the University of Bolton and is currently doing his PhD, concentrating on the poetry of Keith Douglas – a soldier killed in action during the Second World War.

Owen already has two books published and has toured the country reading his work. Owen’s poetry collection Rego Retold was been named Poetry Book of the Month by The Observer earlier this year.

Professor Jon Glover tells us Owen has submitted his PhD and should have his viva soon. Said Professor Glover: ‘This is great publicity for University of Bolton and a great celebration of Owen’s achievements. Colleagues who met him may remember that he was the youngest ever UK judo champion and had a serious spinal injury which left him tetraplegic.’ If you missed Monday night’s Inside Out North West, watch it on iplayer.

chineseVisitCropChina delegation visits University

With Chinese President Xi Jinping currently enjoying a historic state visit to the UK – Bolton has hosted its own delegation from the Far East.
A group of about 40 staff and students from the famous Bayi School in Beijing – which President Jinping once attended – came to the borough to visit the town, the University and its football club.
Wanderers helped to organise the trip, which saw the school’s vice-principal sign a memorandum of understanding with the club, which is aimed at forging links that could result in Whites coaches travelling to China and Bayi students coming to train at the new free school at the Macron.
Simon Li, of the China Alliance, which organised the visit with Whites, told The Bolton News: ‘The idea is that in the future, students from Bayi will come to train as students at the Bolton Wanderers Free School and perhaps go on to study at the University of Bolton.’
